Appearance: TAKING A SELFIE!!
Personality: On the outside, Izumo usually appears calm, collected, and very composed even under a good amount of pressure or dangerous situations. He tries to use facts and logical thinking to make his decisions, which work for him most of the time. As the second in command of the fire king, it's either a perfect fit or an oxymoron. Members of the fire clan are known for their power, turbulent inner emotions, and strength. Izumo has these things, but he doesn't reveal his inner emotions and thought process to most people. His demeanor fits the mood of the situation -- almost chameleon like on what role he needs to fill. He can be that backbone decision maker, the organizer of the clan and he can also be a charmer who gives one too many compliments to women. He's a bit of a womanizer to say the least, as he mentions having plenty of relations with women and flirting with them. He's also the one who deals with women the most out of all the Homra members, and seems to have enough charms to make him self appealing. Even with a woman some might see as an "enemy" to Homra, he treats her with respect and compliments her. He's not the type to outright rub someone wrong, even if he dislikes the person (unless, well, see below about his bar.), instead thinking of how he could possibly use the person to his advantage.

As the owner of his bar, HOMRA, he tries to be the ideal bartender who's polite, hospitable, friendly and pays attention to details. He's even a bit silly and obsessive when it comes to his bar. It's noted he has an appreciation aesthetics, culture, the arts, and finer things in life. These interests have made him seem more the mature, cool type to the others. With fellow clansmen, he's seen as the dependable adult figure who can either scold/lecture or help out. These many faucets of his overall personality make him a rather complex, mysterious, and possibly intimidating to his other clansmen, which in return earns him respect. While he knows how to control himself, but even then there are times when he gets so overwhelmed and his sense of control over himself goes out the door. These moments can be split up into a few scenarios, but the most common one is hurting his bar. You see, Izumo treasures his bar quite a lot. So he no qualms about using his physical strength, using a rather scary/intimidating voice, and making threats to prevent/stop his bar from being damaged. He's even threatened and gotten rough with his other clansman over his bar. The other occasions are much more serious and usually happen between him and his two closest friends (Mikoto and Totsuka.) The person that has ever really made him lose his self control is Mikoto, who is closest friend. He's gotten into fights, verbal with some physical elements involved, and he shows that he can be frustrated and not think logically or in a calculated manner.
[ "Do you wanna die, Mikoto?" At Kusanagi’s expression, one he never usually wore which was a fierce look only a paper’s breadth away from looking like he was about to cry, Suou smiled in a wry, troubled way." ]

So when it comes to people he cares deeply about, sometimes he can't control all his emotions and has to let them out. He's mentioned as not being the sentimental type, but when it comes to his closest friends, he has a fondness and dedication to them.

When it's more peaceful in the Homra clan, his sense of humor and friendly personality comes out with his clansmen. He uses first names or suffixes with his clansman quite often, even calling Yata, "Yata-chan" and Anna, "Anna-chan" and so on. As mentioned above, the other members of Homra have come to respect and see Izumo as a dependable figure. He even inherited/took over his bar when he was underage from his uncle who decided to open it on a random whim, showing even at an earlier age he liked to take on responsibilities (people, well, that's a little different and complex.) He's even helps Seri (second in command for the blue king.), taking her into his place when she broke her heel and needed to dry her clothing after a very long/rough day. In the novels, while he's cautious about having Anna join Homra as a member, and displeased at seeing very young blue clansmen, he does take the responsibility to ensure her safety and her aunt's (former teacher of his) safety. While the motivations for this are mixed, it's still a huge responsibility. He takes care and watches over his clansmen, as the one who dresses their wounds, gives them parental/guardian like scolding and advice, and helps them if he can. He's the type to remind his clansmen to take an umbrella out because it might rain, give friendly advice, and tease them like an older sibling at times. He makes sure they're fed and minding their manners in his bar, too. Especially in his precious bar.

While Mikoto is considered the fire king, it's Izumo who does a lot of the background work and organization. He's made network connections, gathered information, and made Homra more of a threat than some group of people who have magical fire powers and can beat people up. He's not shy about blackmailing, extorting, being rough/physical, and manipulating to get what he wants. He's good at speaking and being rather vague if he sees a person as an ally, enemy, or somewhere in between. Despite having all these personal connections and information, he knows people flock to him because of Mikoto. He doesn't crave the power of being a king, as he seen how it's taken a toll on Mikoto, and that's why he also feels a connection to Seri (blue king's second in command.)
[ "There’s been more and more people who come to rely on Kusanagi-san, hasn’t there."

"I wonder why they keep comin’ to me. Even though I can’t do anythin’."

"Even though you say that, Kusanagi-san, you help them without throwing them out, don’t you. You’ve got information, and you’ve got a bunch of acquaintances, and-"

"-And I have Mikoto, yeah." ]
So he is almost like the shadow king, and he's made Homra powerful in other ways besides Mikoto's strength. He's seen throughout canon being the tactician, organizing the executing the actual orders Mikoto gives out. He's even ordered Mikoto to follow a certain plan of action, not concerned that Mikoto is a king. This goes back to him and Mikoto being childhood friends before all this king and Homra clan stuff even happened. He still sees Mikoto in some ways as the boy he met years ago, and the some of the same goes with Totsuka. The three of them share a connection, often balancing each other. They trust each other without question, and they've shared intimate emotional moments with each other that very few of other clansmen, minus Anna, have seen. Mikoto is someone he worries, cares about, but at the same time he knows he has to be that rock and levelheaded person for him. He helps Mikoto bear the burden of being a king, and with that, he needs to be stable. That's why he's probably shown as the composed, levelheaded one most of the time. He can also "sense" what Mikoto feels at times, along with having a deeper standing of Mikoto very few have any insight into. Yet he's one for joking and teasing him, too, saying he'd kick him out or make him sleep in the closet. There have been times where he's scolded Mikoto for his behavior for hurting his bar. Izumo seems to be one of the few that has conversations with Mikoto that are more than just a few words at a time when it's a serious matter. They're seen giving each other feedback, respecting each other's opinions. Mikoto usually wants to do something, and he's the one that tries to think it over and see if it's doable (and usually he makes it doable.) While he does think things out logical, trying to see advantage and disadvantage points, in the past he asked Totsuka about the other's gut feelings about a person. He's trusted these gut feelings and hunches, often following up on them. Izumo thinks Totsuka has many talents, but his best one is calming and bringing sense to the members of Homra. He also envies how carefree Totsuka was even though he thought his friend had a few screws loose. Totsuka also is someone he found dependable, finding strength and comfort in the other's company, personality, eccentric antics, and ability to connect and read/judge others well.
[ To Suou (Mikoto), Kusanagi (Izumo) would be a sword with reason, and Totsuka would become a chain to hold back Suou who would often be drawn in by his power. It isn’t sure whether that was simply because of the difference in their dispositions, or because Suou’s will and unconsciousness had something to do with it.

The red king, and two clansmen. That was the very first shape of the red clan.]
With the loss of Totsuka, the balance of the trio's dynamic became unstable. Izumo often paired up Totsuka and Mikoto together, but when Totsuka is murdered, that balance goes haywire. While it's very apparent throughout the series it affects Mikoto, it also affected Izumo. With the lack of Totsuka supporting the both of them, the plot of the series unfolds and the eventual death of Mikoto occurs. Izumo is shown to be sentimental (which Totsuka notes to be very rare, and he's even embarrassed about it when it's brought up.) about Totsuka's personal belongings around the bar even though he says they're cluttering the place up and doesn't match the environment at all. Yet he still keeps his things there, though, not able to move them away after his friend's death. With Mikoto's death, he is able to know his friend is finally at peace after struggling with losing Totsuka and the burden of being a king. He believes that Mikoto was a good king, the best king all of Homra could have asked for.

THIS IS A STORY FULL OF HAPPINESS

Abilities: He has a red aura which is kind of like magical fire/flame powers!! He can melt things and conduct heat, but he's not as strong is Mikoto. Yet that doesn't mean he's weak, as he's second in command. He's a pretty good fighter from what has been shown, but he'll not go out of his way to pick a useless fight. He's more into information gathering and doing organizational work.

Fireballs! He can create them using his cigarette lighter and they explode on impact.

The logical assumption of having his bar and his two closest friends back (alive, and not some ghost haunting him.) would make him happy. Not saying he wasn't happy, but he wasn't jumping for joy or thinking what happened was a miracle. Yet it technically was a miracle, and his first thought of seeing his two friends alive and together was thinking somehow he kicked the bucket, too. None of this was logical or made sense, but he didn't exactly wish for this. Sure, there were times he thought about what things would be like if the two of them were alive, but nothing could have prepared him for this. Yet there was a simplicity to life here, which he was unsure how he felt about. Maybe living in this sort of place would give some of the others a taste of what normalcy was like -- maybe him as well.

While not everyone in Homra was here, the bar was here, and so he kept busy with that. It was easy to keep busy with his bar, paying attention to it and coming up with new drinks and dishes for customers. While this place was nothing like Shizume City, he made sure to bring a sense of familiarity to those he knew from back home -- HOMRA bar was once again a home for them all. People already started to fall back into old habits, and he could tell in time new habits were forming as new people entered into the fray. He welcomed new customers and old friends alike, making drinks for them and getting them dishes to go along with it. While at the moment he wasn't gathering information for Homra, he knew in time his old habits and rituals would come into play. He already took his former job of helping Mikoto function day to day back, but he was actually impressed to see the other managing decently enough here. Totsuka was still into new hobbies and trying things out, Anna walked around with her marbles and liking red things, and well, Yata was still picking fights and rough housing in his bar too much. These were familiar things to him, and he wondered how much would change if they left this place. Would he be without his two friends again? How would he deal with the Homra members losing two important figures so quickly?

He sighed, finishing a glass he was polishing. He closed his eyes for a seconding, thinking of the way Totsuka smiled, telling him that things would work out in the end. Even if he knew that was impossible sometimes, and the smile was just reassurance, it made him feel better. He had a new life here, a new chance. Who knew what could happen here? So far it wasn't too bad, despite the whole kidnapped against his will thing. No way would he let that slide, and in the back of his mind, he had a few ideas of what to do when the right time and opportunity came along.

This was supposed to be a story full of happiness now. He wouldn't let it go to waste by over thinking about the sad things as he had things to do -- bar things to do... oh, and Homra and friend things, too.
